Magic was really Magic. a 6′9” player who played point guard it’s extra-ordinary. He was really dominant in that position over his contemporaries in that era.
However, I Pick the Big O, Oscar Robertson as the best point guard to play his position. he was an instant triple double. he can score, pass and also rebound. he is the only NBA player to have a triple-double season average.

I agree 100%. Magic is the greatest ‘POINT GUARD’ ever.
BTW Alpha,
your so called greatest player ever (Magic) ‘SAID and ‘ADMITS’ that MICHAEL JORDAN WAS BETTER THEN HIMSELF! So what do you think about that? (since you always concerned about what someone else says)
MICHAEL JORDAN IS THE GREATEST!

Well according to Michael Jordan, repeatedly, Magic is the greatest to ever play the game.

I think Magic was the best point guard ever. However as the years go by I become more appreciative of John Stockton. The gap is I think closer than I thought when they retired but Magic is still number one, and no one else is in the class of those two. I consider Jerry West and Oscar Robertson to be combo guards or they would be in the class of Magic and Stockton.
So the question is why Magic, his size and vision and the way he used the two, especially size. I remember how easy it was for him to get into the key by beating his man with his strength and ability to change direction quickly and the to step around and past post players for very easy lay ups, latter in his career he developed an outside shot and was still in his prime and in many ways getting better when he retired. He was an excellent rebounder especially on the defensive boards, the best PG in transition ever, excellent at getting the ball into Kareem in the post, hitting a cutting Worthy or drawing the defense and kicking out to a wide open Byron Scott. Have to add the genius of Jerry West for recognizing what he needed to compliment Magic on D, and knowing who to get. Scott guarded the point, Worthy the off guard and A.C. Green or Rambis could guard SF if Magic was better suited to defend the PF. That was the key to being able to use Magic for big minutes without having to make substitutions for match up difficulty.
Stockton was great at controlling pace and was one the most if not the most efficient shooters ever at the point guard position and unlike Magic could guard any point guard in the league. Have to remember as well that it was usually Stockton who led the league in assists, when the two were in the league together. Most likely that Stockton would have won at least one championship if the Lakers were not so much deeper than the Jazz.
Today Nash is very good something like Stockton but even better in transition. Though he plays hard on defense he is not even close to being as good as Stockton in that regard.
I have not seen much tape of Bob Cousey in years, but by looking at the stats and the little bit of tape that I have I am comfortable with my claim that Magic and Stockton stand alone. I did not like Isiah Thomas much but he could sure heat up, Mark Price was excellent and had a season or two in which he was as good as Stockton in every way, but the prime of his career was to short. One of my favorites was Kevin Johnson who was a great all round point guard and as fearless as they come. Gary Payton and Dennis Johnson were not as well rounded as Kevin Johnson but they were the two best defensive point guards ever, few things are more rare in the NBA than a PG who can shut down an offense before it even gets started, only Payton and DJ come to mind.

You could argue he was the best point guard/center
he did fill in for kareem and they won the game.
so yes he is by far the best point guard/forward/center
to play in the nba, no one passed better than magic
including pistol pete.
but MJ still is the greatest over all the postion players.

You guys are freagen high magic johnson was not the best point guard he doesnt even have any freagen records held in assists, the best point guard in history is John Stockton with no doubt i mean leads in total assists and assists in a season by ALOT….you guys need to think before u just say some one is the best at sumthing, plus Magic was truly more of a shooting guard in a point guard position…i mean next your gonna say Oscar Robertson was the greatest point guard too? We are talking about best point guard, not magic johson playing all positions because thats not the job of a point guard…

magic is one of the greatest in the game. if there is any doubt
just ask dr. j. julius irving watched magic play all 5 positions in his rookie year. at 6′9" teams had to come up with ways
to at least slow him down. most guards are too small and weak, and forwards are too slow. there are guards out there that are in the same league as far as ball handling(john
stockton, jason kidd, oscar robertson, pete maravich) but
none have the size, the speed , and the ability to instantly
recognize a scoring opportunity like magic. by his own
admittion magic said that jordan is the greatest and jordan
returned the same to magic. this will be debated for years
to come. kidd and stockton are great point guards but they don’t have magics size which makes it a sight to see a 6′9"
point guard more amazing.
