Olson would rather drink…than work

TUCSON – Lute Olson refused Tuesday to elaborate what caused him to take a leave of absence, but the 73-year-old Arizona basketball coach admitted he sought treatment for stress and anxiety.

"I’m already going beyond what I was going to tell you," Olson said at a televised news conference. "That’s a personal issue."

But Olson did say his family doctor examined him last month, and said, "You’re ready for whatever you want do do."

Olson said he plans to coach at least until 2011, when his contract runs out, and said the school’s verbal agreement with Kevin O’Neill to be Olson’s successor has been tabled.

"I asked him, if he wanted to be an assistant another three or five years, and Kevin said, no."

Olson said the school would honor O’Neill’s remaining year on his contract but that O’Neill would not be on the basketball staff next season.

O’Neill acted as UA’s interim coach from Nov. 4 through March 7. He said last week he planeed to honor his two-year commitment but that he would look at other offers.

Olson seemed annoyed by some questions from reporters, and joked that the news conference had raised my blood pressure and his resting heart rate.

"Don’t let that be the headline tomorrow," Olson told a reporter.

Without prompting, Olson brought up a rumor that he attended a rehab facility.

"I’d like to know what kind of rehab facility I would go to," Olson said. "I don’t smoke. I don’t drink, except for two glasses of wine a night, which my doctor wants me to drink."

Olson said he was told by UA athletic director Jim Livengood and associate athletic director Kathleen "Rocky" LaRose not to talk publicly about his leave of absence while he was on Family Medical Leave Act. The act does not prohibit employees from talking.

Besides getting clearance from his doctor to coach again, Olson said he received the OK from Livengood.

"Mr. Livengood said, ‘Are you ready to face this,’ and I said, ‘Absolutely."

Olson said he had no option, given his medical condition, to coach last season.

"I didn’t let the kids down; my health let me down," Olson said. "If I could have coached, I would have. I love my job."
