THE LEGEND

INGLEWOOD, Calif., Feb. 15— Earvin (Magic) Johnson scored 39 points and led Los Angeles back from a 17-point third-quarter deficit to a 106-103 victory over the Boston Celtics, giving the Lakers the best record in the National Basketball Association. Johnson scored 8 points over the final three and a half minutes, including two clinching free throws with four seconds to play, to lift the Lakers to their 38th victory in 50 games this season, one game better than the Celtics. After the teams exchanged baskets, Johnson sank an 18-footer with 23 seconds to play to put the Lakers ahead, 102-99. After Robert Parish scored on a dunk, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made two free throws to put the Lakers up by 104-101 with 16 seconds to play. The free throws gave Abdul-Jabbar 10 points, keeping alive his streak of 743 consecutive games in double figures.

During Game 5 of the 1980 NBA Finals Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (the league MVP) suffered an ankle injury. Although he would return to the game and lead the Lakers to victory he would not travel with the team to Philadelphia. Prior to Game 6 Magic Johnson learned that Larry Bird had been named Rookie of the Year which wasnt surprising since he the Celtics won 32 more games than they had the previous year. However when Magic found out that Bird won the voting 63-3 he used it as motivation for the upcoming game. They want to see who the top rookie is? Well, watch what I do in Game 6 against the Sixers. Starting at center in place of the ailing MVP the rookie went on to have the greatest performance in NBA history by scoring 42 points, pulling down 15 rebounds, dishing out 7 assists, ripping away 3 steals and blocking 1 shot.

Magic Johnson, Steve Wynn, and Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt — between them, they’re worth billions and we’re not. What do they know that can help us?–From Larry King Live

Follow young Earvin from the driveway where his father taught him the game, to high school, and then to Michigan State, where his Spartan team famously beat Larry Bird’s Indiana State team in the 1979 NCAA championship game. The action quickly moves to the NBA and Johnson’s storied career with the Lakers – playing with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy – vanquishing first Julius Erving and the 76ers, then Bird and the Celtics, on the way to five championships and the birth of a great dynasty.
