During Game 5 of the 1980 NBA Finals Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (the league MVP) suffered an ankle injury. Although he would return to the game and lead the Lakers to victory he would not travel with the team to Philadelphia. Prior to Game 6 Magic Johnson learned that Larry Bird had been named Rookie of the Year which wasnt surprising since he the Celtics won 32 more games than they had the previous year. However when Magic found out that Bird won the voting 63-3 he used it as motivation for the upcoming game. They want to see who the top rookie is? Well, watch what I do in Game 6 against the Sixers. Starting at center in place of the ailing MVP the rookie went on to have the greatest performance in NBA history by scoring 42 points, pulling down 15 rebounds, dishing out 7 assists, ripping away 3 steals and blocking 1 shot.
