Lakers’ fans refuse to admit such because it’s hard to see that someone has surpassed Magic, as he set the bar ridiculously high. And as a Laker, no less.
However, I think Kobe is a better player than Magic was. You have to understand that Magic Johnson had two hall-of-fame players around him in Kareem and Worthy, as well as historic bench players in Rambis and Byron Scott. And Magic finished his career with five rings. Magic was a great facilitator, but he did indeed need those players around him.
Kobe, on the other hand, has had great success with less of a supporting cast. Though Kobe’s first three were with Shaq, both Kobe and O’neal were considered the two best players in the NBA, hands down. It really wasn’t "Shaq’s team" or "Kobe’s team." Both were MVP material.
I don’t think Kobe surpasses Magic entirely. I do think that Kobe has surpassed him, and can do so even more by adding a sixth ring, especially in the era of LBJ/Bosh/Wade.

Case can be made for both but to me Magic is better than Kobe because of versatility, all around game, rebounding, leadership and winning.

Kobe Bryant is a better "scorer" then Magic Johnson. He’s not a better "all-around" player then Magic Johnson — in terms of IQ, passing, rebounding, reading the game, team leadership; he’s not.

Magic was better. Even though Kobe has 1 more ring, he has one less finals MVP and 2 less season MVPs.

Many Laker fans out there think Kobe has surpassed Magic. Including Jerry West & Magic Johnson himself. I however believe that they are joint number 1#. Should Kobe win another ring, he will be considered the greatest Laker..Unanimous

Disagree. Magic was far more versatile. He could rebound and pass much better than Kobe. He had amazing court vision. The guy could play any position on the court. He is just as clutch as Kobe is. Magic also has his fair share of accomplishments.

Well when other people say rebounding, Magic was 6′9. He could see down the court and pass it in a split second. His passing was out of this world. Kobe is a better scorer and a better lockdown defender. Kobe was far more double teamed than Magic was and what I think is more of a threat. But if you ask me if I’d rather have Magic Johnson on my team or Kobe, I’d have to pick Magic. So I disagree.

rofl .
Strongly Disagree.. Magic is better because check this… Magic actually PASSED the ball! Kobe is known for jacking up very low % shots . What’s so great about that?

No way I have to disagree on that, Kobe Bryant is not a better all-around player than Magic Johnson.
